People often use natural and herbal remedies for long-term (chronic) conditions that haven’t been successfully treated with traditional medicine. People also use these remedies to improve their quality of life.

Cold Natural Herbal Remedies
Hot and cold tea preparations can soothe some of the symptoms of colds and influenza. Honey lemon, ginger and green tea packed with antioxidants are herbal cold remedies that people swear by.

Ginger itself has a dozen antiviral compounds, and is a powerful digstive herb. Ginger root is a plant native to southeast Asia and is also grown in the United States and other countries. It fights colds by relieving congestion, soothing sinus pain and sore throats.

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra)
Elderberry has been used for centuries to treat colds and flu. Recent research indicates that elderberry fruit extract may de-activate cold and flu viruses by preventing them from replicating (they must reproduce or else they can’t infect the body.) Although this finding is exciting it only proves what millions have known for ages - it works for colds and flu. It is best taken at the first signs of a cold either as an infusion, tincture or capsules. Discontinue use as soon as your symptoms subside. Available from health shops.

Garlic (Allium sativum)

Garlic is sometimes referred to as a truly natural antibiotic as it can destroy foreign bacteria without any side effects. Its antibiotic properties stem from the substance allicin, a potent antibacterial agent that is released when garlic cloves are cut or bruised. The volatile oil containing the allicin is excreted via the lungs. This explains why garlic is so successful in combating respiratory infections such as chronic bronchitis, catarrh and recurrent colds and flu.

Vitamin B, especially vitamin B-12, and folic acid are supplements that help rid a body of a cold sore. Another home remedy combination for a cold sore is a formula that can be made ahead of time and stored in a glass or plastic bottle. This is made with 100 milliliters of coconut oil, 2 ml of dettol and 3 ml of carbolic acid. This is applied once or twice a day directly on the cold sore. Not only is this a home remedy that works for cold sores, but also for boils, minor itching and mosquito bites. The shelf life of the formula is many years. Witch hazel is said to help cure cold sores as well.

Use comfrey salve which will help with the healing process of cold sores. This herb is a cell proliferate, and it will help your body heal faster than normal. Use a sanitized needle and lightly prick and poke the cold sores. Now apply the comfrey salve externally on your cold sores for quick results.

Cover your cold sores with cooling aloe vera gel. Aloe vera works as a remedy for cold sores. You can apply it to cold sores many times in the day. It will heal the sores in a kind and gentle manner.
