What is Constipation

Constipation is an infrequent or a difficult bowel movement. It is a symptom, not a disease, and is defined as having a bowel movement less than 3 times a week. If you do not have a bowel movement daily it does not mean that you are constipated. Normal bowel movements could happen 3 times in a single day, or even 3 times in a week.

There are two basic types of constipation - organic and functional.

Organic constipation is a result of some physical change, obstruction, or distortion in your colon. This type of constipation needs immediate attention from a doctor.

Functional Constipation This type of constipation is a result of not following a proper diet, drinking enough fluids, having good emotional health and not having a good lifestyle .

Symptoms of constipation

Following are the signs that indicate the presence of this ailment:

No bowel movements at least once a day

Pain in the abdomen

Heaviness in the stomach

Wind formation

Mucus coated tongue

Finding the right supplement program for you is often difficult. The suggested plan however is to add 10,000 IU of Vitamin A to your diet; 50mg of vitamin B-1, 2, and 100mg of Vitamin B-3. Add 100mg of B-5, 50mg of B-6, 50 of B-12; include some beta-carotene (10,000 IU daily), 300mg of Bioflavonoid, 300 Biotin, 1,000 mg of Vitamin C; 800mg of calcium, 50mg of Choline, 150 IU of chromium, 3mg of copper, and 400 IU of Vitamin D to live healthier.

Papaya and guava are also useful in treating constipation. Regular intake of papaya at early morning in an empty stomach prevents constipation. Fruit salad containing guava and papaya can be taken anytime of the day. It provides good roughage and clears your bowel system and prevents constipation.

You can also take warm lime water early in the morning. It prevents constipation and keeps the body and mind fresh.

Most of the commonly used laxatives are derived from a variety of plants. Herbal laxatives can be either stimulating or bulk-forming. For people who need long-term constipation relief, mild, bulk-forming, plant-derived laxatives are most highly recommended. These laxatives, including fenugreek, flaxseed, and psyllium, contain high levels of mucilage and fiber that expand in the presence of water; and work to stimulate the bowels by increasing in volume, which triggers a muscular reflex.

Exercise-Staying active can help prevent constipation, generally keeping your whole body in better health than if you are completely sedentary. Walking, swimming or water-based exercises (aquanatal classes), cycling on an exercise bicycle, or other more formal pregnancy exercise classes can all help. There are also various yoga positions which can be practised to keep constipation at bay.
