Gout is a strange disease, which is not in any way related to other forms of the bone disease. It is a metabolic disorder. Gout occurs more frequently in males, usually in middle life.

What are the causes of gout?

Gout is caused by an accumulation of urate crystals in the joints, inflaming the joint. Urate crystals are formed due to an overabundance of uric acid in the blood. Foods high in purines, such as organ meats (i.e. liver, brains, kidneys and sweetbreads), anchovies, herring, asparagus and mushrooms, release uric acid when digested, sometimes causing uric acid levels in the blood to increase. While increased uric acid levels may not be particularly harmful to most, genetics seem to play a major role in the body’s ability to filter uric acid naturally.

Gout Symptom:

A typical gout symptom includes:

Rapid severe pain in the big toe is the most common gout symptom.

The affected joints can become very tender and swollen, and can feel warm.

The skin on the joint turns reddish.

Multiple attacks of acute arthritis

Arthritis attacks that develop over the course of an extremely quick time (e.g., over the span of 12-24 hours with inflamed, painful, red, and hot joints)

How is Gout Diagnosed?

Gout is diagnosed based on family history, specific symptoms, and laboratory tests. Diagnosis of gout is confirmed by the determination of high levels of uric acid in the blood, monosodium urate crystals in the fluid of an inflamed joint, more than one attack of acute arthritis, and the involvement of only one joint such as the toe, ankle, or knee.

The food should consist of fresh fruits and vegetables-substances, which do not stick to the intestines. Fruits, which can be taken without peeling, should be taken. In the beginning of the treatment, the best course would be to live on fruit juices. That would give some rest to the intestines. Fruits recommended are: oranges, grape fruit, pineapple, raspberry and pear. Vegetables like the various gourds, cabbage, tomatoes and greens are the best. The more chronic the disease, the greater should be the period for which the patient should live on fruits and vegetables.

Ginger or Zingiber officinale, has been discovered to inhibit production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are involved in pain and inflammation. As suggested by an uncontrolled Danish study that was conducted in 1992, 40 arthritis patients and 16 patients suffering from muscular discomfort were given powdered ginger. It was observed that all patients with musculoskeletal pain and three-fourths of those with Arthritis reported varying degrees of pain relief and no side effects, Ginger is safe for long term consumption.
